How to enable USB Storage on your office computer

Steps are as under:

1. To start with you will need adminstrator rights to follow the below mentioned procedure.

2. Read the points mentioned at the following microsoft website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823732 your admin would have used these to disable your USB storage access.

3. Enable windows pop-up to install a new hardware when a USB Pen drive or HDD has been connected to your machine:

Set the Start value in the following registry key to 3 (take a backup of the registory incase you are not sure):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor

When you do so, the USB storage device will be recognized as a new hardware when you connect your device to the computer.

4. Enable installation of the USB Pen Drive (no need to perform this if you already have a Pen drive or HDD working before the Admin disabled it)

a) go to %SystemRoot%\Inf folder & find following 2 files:
Usbstor.pnf
Usbstor.inf

Set the Full Control access rights to all users or atleast yourself. Try to install the hardware using the wizard (disconnect & reconnect your Pen Drive or HDD to prompt this). If it works fine, then no need to do the next step.

b) Copy the Usbstor.pnf and .inf files to mydocuments & provide the path of your my documents to the installation wizard to find the drivers & it will surely set the USB pen drive for you.
